Community / Philanthropy

At FGS G.T.A. we believe it is imperative and good governance to give back to your community and support a charity of choice.

Our charity of choice is Special Olympics Canada.

Special Olympics is very close and dear to our hearts as our charity as Darryl and Stella D’Silva two of our stakeholders have a son Alex who was born with Down Syndrome.

Alex has become the FGS token Celebrity with both our employees and our insurance partners.

Alex has been involved with Special Olympics Canada for the past 10 years. Participating in such programs as basketball, curling, soccer and baseball.

During the year Stella gives many speeches explaining the value of Special Olympics from the point of view of the parent and athlete to current and potential sponsors and partners of Special Olympics Ontario and Special Olympics Canada. Stella and Darryl’s son Alex, accompanies her at all the speeches and adds a few words of his own. They meet with various partners and talk with them explaining the importance of Special Olympics to the athletes, to their families and the community at large. Stella and Alex were recently the guest speakers at the 2015 Special Olympics Limitless Gala at the Royal York Hotel , Attended Special Olympics Queen’s Park Day, and have also been on TSN promoting Special Olympics, as well as many other events over the years.

Environmental / Green Initiatives

At First General Services, we strive to mitigate our loss assignments in a manner that lessens the impact on the environment. By using leading edge drying equipment we reduce the time and electricity needed to dry structures and finishes. Specialty drying equipment enables greater amounts of original finishes to be saved and dried. This process reduces the amount of waste generated, loss of use time and reinstatement costs.

Not all losses can be dried without some selective demolition and, when this occurs, we are mindful of diverting recyclable materials from the waste stream with a goal of 80% diversion when possible and we ensure hazardous and electronic wastes are taken to the proper waste disposal facility.

At First General Services, we take stewardship of the planet seriously. We use plant-based, environmentally-friendly cleaners and disinfectants whenever possible. By reducing the use of toxic chemicals when processing a loss, we reduce the need to displace the homeowner or use additional mechanical controls to clean the air which, in turn, saves both time and energy.

Sometimes there are pre-existing hazards built right into the home like asbestos-containing materials, lead, mercury and mold. Our team approach to claim management gives our front-line workers access to decades of experience in identifying potential hazardous materials before any work even begins. Once identified and confirmed, we have the resources and tools to effectively isolate and remediate the hazardous materials without exposing homeowners or the general public to undue risk.

Our fleet of service vehicles are equipped with telemetric/GPS monitors to enable effective dispatching of service personnel to claims. The monitors allow for up-to-the minute reports on vehicle system performance to ensure that our modern fleet is running as efficiently as possible. With the rising costs of fuel and vehicle maintenance, being proactive allows First General Services to reduce repair costs and keep its fleet running at peak performance levels.
